Just Another Piece of the Furniture

Thought everything around me would remind me of you.

Thought I'd have to replace everything with new.

The stool where you rested your feet.

The table where we used to eat.

But they're all just pieces of the furniture.

All the memories in this house that was once our home.

Now I sit amongst the ruins all alone.

Thought I'd never shake the image of you in your favorite lounge chair.

But now it's just another piece of furniture covered with dog hair.

At least Duke comes home at night.

I don't forget the hours we spent snuggling on our brand new love seat.

But look at it now; just a tattered old couch, not a shrine.

For years I gladly set your place at the head of the kitchen table.

But now the best seat in the house is mine.

I'm not bitter like Alanis. I hardly look at my cross-eyed bear.

I keep it tucked in the drawer that used to hold your socks and underwear.

I bought new sheets for our enchanted queen size bed.

The end of the magic is on your head.

I'll bet you miss the TV you watched

And the coffee table that held your beer.

If you hadn't taken me for granted,

You'd still be here.

Do I hate and curse you?

Why should I; none of the other pieces of furniture do.
