I was shocked when less than a year ago I learned there were those in this Great Nation who believed Slavery and its tragic fallout…never happened. I am thanking God that, although it was a long time coming, the Government of America has at last openly recognized that it did happen, and that it did…on paper…end. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, however, all of the slaves in all the states weren't set free until 2 years later in 1865. Thus, Juneteenth...! has been established as a Legal Holiday to 'remember' this Joyous Occasion of the 'Good News'. Juneteenth…! America's Commemoration of this day is a beginning to 'healing'... Thank God, Thank God...at Last! Pressing-on!

At Last…America has recognized a grievous shame At Last…she reaches to touch the roots of her…children’s pain At Last…she admits ending… what some have said…never reigned At Last…a due remembrance of our history’s horrific disdain At Last…Oh, God, what a blessing just to board the…h-e-a-l-i-n-g...train At Last…the atoning of slavery’s blood… the bones…O Lord, the chains… Is recalled in an annual commemoration… an honored day…a bitter/sweet refrain Juneteenth...! Juneteenth… surely our forefathers clap and exclaim! Juneteenth…! Juneteenth… established and proclaimed! Thank God, At Last! At Last! … Juneteenth! Psalm 126 copyright; jmsbell-6/18/21

We need all the holy days we can get. During my 30 years at Texas Southern University, a separate, but unequal, state university, we were allotted only so many holidays a year. Sometimes, TSU chose Juneteenth over Memorial Day.

I have been watching both the OWN and History channels rendition of what happened to Greenwood, the wealthy black district in Tulsa that was ransacked, its occupants massacred, and burned back in 1920 when the Black Wall Street became too prosperous for the racist Tulsa townspeople. Oprah's version is better and more informative of that terrible act of hatred.

It's taken so long in coming since I was in college and we thought that things would change. I hope that someday, reminders like Juneteenth won't be needed anymore when every man and woman will be judged by the strength of their character.
