A Living Death

Alzheimer’s - A living death
Mental deterioration
A slow suffocation.

A Caregiver’s love
Hugging, kissing, holding
Hope – from above.

Out of control
Loved one lost in space
In a black hole.

Alzheimer’s - A living death
A reality, so cruel
Until the very last breath.

I was the assistant administrator of a nursing home for 10 years.
It is strange how little I think about that- but I can be taken back there with a poem like this.
Not every Alzheimer's patient got a comforter. For some of them it was just me.
What a mixed bag this life brings.
I did not leave that job, I was removed. Comforting was not a management agenda at that facility- and I have to be somewhere where it is.
I am well placed now- with easier conditions to bring comfort.
It is astonishing to be reminded of what privileges have been mine.
We cross certain bridges when we come to them, but have to remember to keep moving.
A living death is out there, several in fact.
I am so sorry for what it takes from all of us.

John

It is so very cruel. One hopes for a glimpse of the former person. Pictures, favourite items, children, anything to jog the memory. Frustratingly to no avail.
Described here with much understanding and angst as hope diminishes.
