Honor has a variety of meanings as readily recognized by the person consulting a dictionary. The appropriate definition that conveys the intent of this writer is: "respect and esteem shown to another person." Of course, by a person who honors himself.

Respect and esteem begin with an assumption that the person who extends respect and esteem to another person has respect and esteem himself. It is only when a person has self-respect and self-esteem that he is capable of having respect and esteem for another person.

Respect is an attitude of deferential regard that allows a person to treat another person with esteem because he values another person as  being of no less in value or worth than he considers himsef to be.

Honor is a choice. A person chooses to honor another person, but not just another person, all people beginning with himself. He embraces the admonishment of St. Peter who says to the people  of love "honor everyone." (1 Pet. 2:17)

Love bears many fruit. One of them is honor. The conveyor of honor is aware that the recipient of honor, a child of the Universe, is worthy and merits honor no less than himself. This is the entitlement for human beings created in the likeness of their Creator.

Whether it is appropriate to say or demonstrate  "I honor you" or "I love you" is an individual preference. To honor a person is to love him and to love a person is to honor him. Although love and honor each has its own specificity, they both are characterized by the highest essence of Spirit that manifests good.

Honor them. Give honor to whom honor is due. Give honor to everyone.
