In my relating to people as a minister, educator and counselor, over the period of more than a half-century, I have discovered an effective response for a person to make, more often than not, especially when offered unrequested statements from "know-it-all" persons and the response to questions asked by most inquisitors, such as the statement and question mentioned above.
Responses to your question by the person who made the statement and the person who asked you the question will make it easy for you to use discernment to do the right thing in the situation specific.
Usually these respondents' questions stop the "know-it-all" persons or inquisitors "cold-in-their tracts," so to speak. and the benefits for respondents can be enormous which include not engaging in trivial pursuits, less stress and maintaining a positive disposition.
