Each day, all around the World, Parents sit and wonder where their lost Children have gone. Living in hope, clutching to an almost hopeless dream. They sit and wait for their return. Never Knowing............

The Lost

She wakes each day to a still, silent house

Stares at the ceiling afraid to move

She wants to get up the children to rouse.

Give them her kisses give them her love.

She wanders downstairs after a while.

Sits at the table clutching her cup

Tears on her cheeks she never smiles

She waits in vain for the children to get up.

She picks up the photo next to her arm

Just as she’s done these last seven years

Wishes them with her, that they’ve come to no harm

Her sight becomes blurred eyes fill with tears.

She remembers the day that she saw them last,

Happy and laughing, joking around

All dressed for school the clock running fast

Sometimes she thinks she can still hear that sound.

Four ‘o’ clock came and they still were not home

By seven, she’d panicked as she called around.

She could find nowhere that they had gone

No one had seen them, both homeward bound.

Next morning the searchers went through the town.

Searching the woodlands, the forest and dams

Knocking on doors and asking around

But no one had seen her little lost Lambs.

Her Husband had left he could not take the strain

A full year of hurting they would argue each day.

Neither could handle the loss and the pain.

Hoping the children had just lost their way.

Now she just sits there each lonely day

Waiting to hear their laughter again

Friends have all left she hears what they say.

The loss of the children did drive her insane.

She sobs at the memory of her happy home.

She waits at the table for them to come down.

Though she fears that they rest in some secret tomb.

She thinks that she’ll see them one day while in Town.

She thinks that she’ll dress and go for a drive

Follow the route that they’d take from the school.

Maybe today she will see them alive.

Take some warm jumpers it’s fall and it’s cool.

But she knows in her heart that for seven years.

Her innocent lambs with God have been sitting

Try as she might she can’t hold back the tears

As she looks at the Photo and just sits there fretting.

You really seem to get into the mind of someone whose child is missing, that takes talent. In a strange way, this made me think of "Hansel and Gretel," which I found very interesting. I think it is because of the way you wrote it and the rhymes, it really gave a feeling of being alone. Well done.

Oh how heartbreaking! I have 4 kids, all grown now, but that was always a fear of mine. I don't know what I'd do if I lost one of my precious gems! My heart goes out to all parents who have suffered such a heartbreaking loss. The not knowing, not having any closure, is the hardest. Thanks for sharing.

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
