The Pageant -- Or Is The Swimsuit Competition Really Necessary?

(Let me preface this by saying that I work at the Hot Springs, AR Convention Center -- and I'm obviously bitter about my age! HA!)

They line up for practice:
Too many, too cute
Too damn perfect
(Twenty-something ... and younger)
Looking like a Robert Palmer
Video vomited all over
The convention center.
They hug each other,
“Why we are simply the
Best of friends … “
(Liars)
Raise their eyebrows
Smile big for the camera
(Vasoline on the teeth
keeps the smile going
even after the teeth have
gone dry.)
Enough high heels
In the dressing room
To satisfy even
Imelda Marcus’ fetishes.
Dresses, each costing enough
To provide back pay for
Several regiments of Iraqi soldiers.
Mothers on the sidelines
Shooting eye daggers
At the competition.
“I tap dance to Dixie”
“I play the violin”
“I am a singer
who only wants world peace.”
" ... to promote literacy."
"... for breat cancer awareness."
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
And they are all in it
Strictly for the
“Scholarship money.”
Right.
It’s Miss Arkansas Pageant time
Again.
My FAVORITE
Time of year.

Leysa, I understand where you're coming from but we men adore these pageants because there is nothing on earth more beautiful than a beautiful woman and I will add regardless of her age.....smile

I feel that if you've got it flaunt it but most of those girls are lipo had and sillY CONE injected. That is why I don't like to watch it anymore. It's phony. Look at the winners from the first one to present. Look at the NATURAL beauty from the past...it is what we lack now on TV and in society.

Thank you,

Teresa

Paul -- I totally understand your perspective and I am all for scholarships. What the folks in the audience don't see are the snippy attitudes that we see behind the scenes. Some of the girls are great, but the majority tend to be hateful, rude and extremely arrogant. Their beauty only running skin deep! But, hey, my husband likes to watch 'em too! They are truly gorgeous to look at!

Leysa, good write but from a man's point of view, whether the smiles are phony or not competition is healthy. I feel that if you got it flaunt. If the competition is all about scholarship money well that is a good reason. Who am I to deprive one of an education? I also don't see anything wrong with the swimsuit competition not when Victoria Secrets gets equal time on the air and the models revel alot more than the contest contestants do. Oh well! that's my opinion.

Enjoyed reading this--humorous as well as 'exposes' the real motive behind all pageants!!

God, Ley, how do you stand it? Nodding, smiling, helping, seething, hiding the emotions that assuredly have come screeching into your mind when dealing with so many different people, in a way, you know, you are a Beauty Queen! Polished, courteous, professional, red-headed and fiery! You are the real Miss Arkansas, teacher, friend, helper and Poet!! ;) Oh, and almost Grandma-to-be, wish Abbey would hurry up and get here!!! Hey, Abbey Arkansas, I like it! :D

funny and ironic--aren't pageants just the most brutal kind of contest for young women? And so few winners...
