 There’s a legend in the West, a story often told
of a golden mountain hidden north of Mexico
And the way to El Dorado none will ever know
The treasure trove of Montezuma and the City of Gold

The Aztec kings once offered prayers to the pagan gods
But then Cortez and all his crew set foot upon the coast.
And when they came ashore the Spanish Conquest had begun.
But now the waves are haunted and the water’s full of ghosts

The gods demanded sacrifice allow the Sun to rise
Each day the priests would pick a warrior to give his life
Up on the Holy Pyramid they’d split a man apart
And cut into his chest and offer up the Sun a heart

Cortez arrived right on the birthday of their morning star
He swore he brought the light of Jesus but his soul was dark

Perhaps Cortez was blameless, maybe so and maybe not
But once the slaughter rose it was impossible to stop
Wars of Whites and Wars Unite and Wars for the Sake of War
But none have been more bloody than those of Conquistadors

In the name of Brotherhood , Cortez stole all he could
First, atop the Pyramid he built a church of wood
Then the Spaniards massacred the Dancers as they danced
So began the butchery, they never ever had a chance

They thought he was Quetzalcoatl turning from the shore
But he only wanted gold and more and more and more

There’s places in the desert where the Indians never go
The sand rolls like an ocean, not a living thing can grow
and anyone who knew the path has perished long ago
But still there’ll always be someone to search for the City of Gold

Three riders from Mojave claimed that they had found the map
One said "I had a family but something in me snapped"
