adapted from the poem by T.S. Eliot
by Joel Sattler
we are the hollow men
we are the stuffed men
leaning together
our heads full of straw
our dry voices when together
whisper so meaningless
quiet and empty
as the wind in dry grass
or rat's feet over broken glass
in our dry and empty cellar
Shape without form,
shade without colour,
Paralysed force,
gesture without motion
Those who have crossed
to death's other Kingdom
Remember us if at all
not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men
the hollow men
Eyes I dare not meet in dreams
In death's dreamy kingdom
These these do not appear:
There, the eyes are
Sunlight on a broken column
There, is a tree swinging
And voice in the windy singing
More distant more distant
more solemn more solemn
Than a fading star
Let me be no nearer
In death's dreamy kingdom
Let me doth also wear
deliberate disguise
Rat's coat, crowskin,
crossed staves In a field
Behaving as wind behaves
No nearer no near
Not as that final meeting
In the twilight kingdom
This is the dead land
This is cactus land
Here are the stone images
raised and received
This here the supplication
of the hand of a dead man
Under the twinkle twinkle
of a fading star.
could it be like this
In death's other kingdom
Walking alone
At the hour when we are
Trembling with tenderness
Lips that would kiss
Forming our endless prayers
to broken stone.
The eyes are not here
There are no eyes here
In this the deathly valley
of dying stars
In this the hollow valley
This broken jaw of kingdoms
In this the last meeting
on the river beach
Sightless, unless
The eyes reappear
As the perpetual star
Multifoliate rose
Of death's twilight kingdom
The hope only
Of all the empty men
the hollow men
Here we go round the prickly pear
Prickly pear prickly pear
Here we go round the prickly pear
At five o'clock in the morning.
Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom
between the first conception
And the begun creation
this is thine own
Between the last emotion
And the instinct response
Falls here the shadow shadow
Life is very long
Between the desire sire
And the spasm spasm
Between the potency
And existence
Between the essence essence
And the descent descent
Falls the Shadow Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom
For Thine is
Life is
For thine is the
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
