We stood under the night
watching the stars flow through the sky
I turned around to look at you
and moonlight was in your eyes
the air was cold, the snow was hard
as I held you safe within my arms
somewhere I heard a nightbird call
somewhere over the garden wall
you asked me if I knew the song
we stood under the wind so long
I sang the dish ran away with the spoon
under the white December moon
so many years so long behind
and still your face I see in my mind
I still remember the perfect time
when your heart beat next to mine
I'll sing you the childish little riddle
of how the cat ran away with the fiddle
and how the little dog laughed and at whom
and how the cow jumped over the moon
if ever you come back again
we'll go out in the winter then
and find the place we were in tune
under the white December moon
December moon
December moon
you face is writ in rune
there is a message there
in the December moon
but now when seasons change at last
all I have left is what has passed
the mystery and the warmth of
the lonely memory of love
I made you happy, you did too
I have only good wish for you
wherever you are, whatever may be
I hope you sometimes think of me
because I never will forget her
but no moment lasts forever
I only pray you'll come back soon
under the white December moon
