I knew that when I turned the corner
I shouldna got up outta bed
I might not ever see tomorrow
perhaps I'd wake up dead
the purple gang took off the sidewalk
laid the concrete on my head
the sky turned out to be the gutter
the blue turned into solid red
what did I do to deserve such a fate?
I coulda been true but I left it too late
thought I was a good man, was that a mistake?
thought it was enough
but it was the icing on the cake
I picked up the phone
with my boss on the wire
he said don't you come in
less your hair is on fire
I got in my car
but it was a wreck
I thought what the hell
but I said what the heck
I sat on a stool
at the Tastee Diner
I felt like a fool
but it couldn't be finer
watched the master at work
flipping flapjacks and eggs
I needed a job
but I just couldn't beg
what did I do to deserve such a fate?
I coulda been true but I left it too late
thought I was a good man, was that a mistake?
thought it was enough
but it was the icing on the cake
above and beyond
was my duty to serve
I'd join the Marines
but I aint got the nerve
but I'm not a coward
I once saved someone's life
when they came at me
with a gun and a knife
if I had a buck
for each buck that I bucked
I'd be a rich man
but I aint got the luck
so like everyone else
I depend on my friends
to pick me back up
till I walk once again
what did I do to deserve such a fate?
I coulda been true but I left it too late
thought I was a good man, was that a mistake?
thought it was enough
but it was the icing on the cake
the sun's going down
but guess that's okay
if I make it I won
the chance for one more day
and so when I pray
when I lay me to sleep
I ask the dear Lord
for my soul to keep
and if I die
just before I awake
I pray the dear Lord
for my soul to take
to be saved for myself
and at last I can be
by the grace of God
to be finally free
what did I do to deserve such a fate?
I coulda been true but I left it too late
thought I was a good man, was that a mistake?
thought it was enough
but it was the icing on the cake
