[based on the sixth poem of
20 Love Songs by Pablo Neruda]
I remember you in the fall of memory
the beret was gray, the heart was cold
fire fought in your twilight eyes
and leaves fell in your water soul
like a vine crawling up my arms
leaves took up your voice so slow
stupified in bonfire thirst
sweet blue hyacinth all twisted oh
this was the fall of memory
where memory fell nothing could grow
what was real became a dream
and what was dream was over
what was dream was over
autumn is far and eyes travel farther
the voice of a bird and the heartbeat of home
going to where my desires were deepest
and kisses descended like red hot stones
sky from a ship, field from the hill,
remembrance of light. a pond in the trees
beyond your eyes burned the coming dusk
smoke and night and a whirlwind of leaves
this was the fall of memory
where memory fell nothing could grow
what was real became a dream
and what was dream was over
what was dream was over
