in fourteen years in the north she was my sure sign of spring--when the fisheagle returned spring a truly arrived.

I miss her and all she represents.

she sits on her dead snag
watching the dark waters
waiting for the silver flash
of an unsuspecting fish --
the silver flash of dinner.
with a tweety bird whistle
she launches , stoops
and strikes.
she is osprey and she
has her brood to feed
her name is osprey ---
she knows her river
and all who belong there.

osprey calls their names
in the evening
she numbers them
in the dawn
she knows their goings
and their comings
where they bed
and where they hunt.

she knows my name
and calls it
the morning and evening
she calls me
in vain
for i am not where
i ought to be-exiled
from tanin-stained river
lined with black spruce
and birch
to limestone creek
by concrete canyon

here I listen
listen for her call
while far away
watching for the silver flash
of an unsuspecting fish
in the dark waters below
she sits on her dead snag

I am trying to buy a boat called an Osprey, 30 footer with twin diesels, but that has nothing to do with this beautiful poem, you are blessed to have been able to see that bird in its abilities to secure a meal for its young...Peace, Ed & Rufuz
