He met me on the street,
common sort, callused hands,
blue jeans, “You’re the poet,”
he said. “You wrote about
a faded jacket... How’d you know?”
We ducked into the pub.
“How’d you know?
How’d you about her?”
I told him that like most of my poems
it was made out of bits and pieces,
chance remarks and whole cloth…
“I was young and full of myself,”
he began
“and she was so beautiful,
so full of life:
Smart, funny, sexy.
Sounds dumb, sound trite all these years on
“I promised her, I promised her,
I promised her the earth
and the moon
and the sea
and the sky
I promised her forever
then we sailed away
I promised to return.”
“I meant to, too.”
“But life got complicated
I moved up the ladder
leading seaman, Bosun’s mate
Bosun...
I left thee sea and married
three kids complicates
your life"
He ordered another round.
“soccer, hockey, ballet,
sailing ...
“But late at night. I see those stars,
hear those combers rolling
up that beach
and far up the strand I see
