things together. important things like love and lust.
We were happy, forever seemed in the bag.
‘till she dumped me,” “Smart kid.”
“Might have been, I was away,
never took the time to write.
Got my head turned by my Jean.
But for 40 years I’ve carried a torch,
“Jack, what do I do?"
“All you can do” I heard myself say
“is play out the hand you’ve been dealt,
losers or winners the are
your cards and your game."
“thanks, Jack.” he said rising. “Waiter
another beer.” He left smiling his
problem at least heard.
I didn’t tell him
that I’ve been there.
I didn’t tell him
that the advice was
the most soul dead,
heartless,
gutless thing I had
ever heard or spoken.
I certainly did not tell him
how I knew that.
