the smoke rolled the down hill bellow the battery
as the last salvo echoed across the field.
the last chance to kill and to maim
raced away skyward and following its
logical trajectory crashed into the enemy’s line
five seconds before the cease fire.
no significant objective was carried no
last minute charge dispersed but the
logical trajectory of warfare demanded
the final shot, which did naught but kill
a few more young men, who died for
nothing , nothing at all.
on the day we remember the smoke, smoke
again rolls down the hill before the battery.
today with guns unshotted they fire salutes
to the smoke – smoke to honor smoke.
salutes fired in support of the fine flowery
speeches, made by weaslely little men,,
which try to argue that those who died
for nothing, save perhaps the speaker’s
profit, had in fact died for something
for anything at all.
but only the smoke remains
