Practicing for a third tour in ‘Nam his F4 hit a mountain in New Mexico . . .
The rector asked me to be Crucifer, to show the cross. Things go full circle -- the lad we were burying had taught me how to carry the processional cross . . .

3 May 1972

Here, we bury him
In the soft vernal earth,
With the ceremony of the nation:
Bugle, flags, guns.
Deep in the soft earth
We lay him.
Let the flags of the vain
Mourn his passing,
And the guns snap
Their brief hymn of praise.
Grief cannot come
Where he is taken . . .

One Lucky Guy by Paul Lonardo

No More Crying Angels by MORGAN ST. JAMES
