The Murder of Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, while he celebrated Mass was
only the most flagrant in a campaign violent repression in tiny El Salvador. Teachers,
organizers, priests, nuns as well as the poor were systematically killed by death squads in the
pay of the oligarchy that ran the country. Romero abhorred what he called the “mysticism of
violence” even in self-defence. He brought the not inconsiderable weight to his office to
bear in exposing the repression. Because he couldn’t be silenced he was shot.
I had been a priest just 4 months. Romero's death showed me just how radical is the gospel of Christ.
These are some of the man words -- before you scoff remember he was martyred for speaking for peace over violence ...
