funny how these things comeback to you --

~~30~~

I was too young then
to hold onto the details
but visiting the farm one summer,
at the age of eight or nine, I
drew hay behind a team
of black horses

The horses walked along the field
while hands on either side tossed
the bales onto the wagon. While those
of us on the wagon stacked the
bales in careful piles.

At the barn the team was hitched
to pulleys that lifted the careful
piles of bales up to the loft,
then dragged them inside.

On the way back to the field
we rode the wagon standing
holding on to the loose ropes
for balance, laughing in the
benign summer sun....

Ah, John, don't we all have ripe summer memories like this that waft back on us like the smell of watermelon or BBQ or newly cut grass.

Beats the 109 degree days around here in Texas these days with air so nasty it risky to be out!!!

Loved the poem!

Pam

Ugh! At age 16, I worked all summer in a hayfield. Lots of lifting heavy bales...Hard, dirty work...but I could've arm wrestled Arnold Swartzanegger and WON! LOL!

Sweet poem, John. The first two lines are best!

Julie :)

John thank you for the reminisce, such a precious part of farm life that living in the city now for awhile has caused me to momentarily forget! Wonderful Write!

Can We Come In and Laugh, Too? by MORGAN ST. JAMES

Rosetta was born in 1909 as the youngest of ten children. The family had more laughter than money and neighbors would knock on their door to ask, "Can we come in and laugh, too?"
