stone pile

they dot the landscape
these memorials
to labour

~30~



year by year the frost
and the plow works the
stones to the surface

glacier erratic the geologist
call’em, broken from their
bed leagues from here

rolled and ground and
smoothed and dumped
by the ice ages past

year by year the ice
and the plow works the
stones to the surface

year by year the plowman
collects and deposits
the eternal harvest here

on this monument of stone
from the field to toil,
to tragedy, and to triumph
