I viewed A brilliant painting Of a Conquistador An elegant portrait of a soldier Wearing a golden helmet, Breast armor plate A scarlet cape Was draped about him He wore a mustache and beard Though It was shadowed in By the master of the brush For reasons only known To the artist. He wore by his side A well earned sword He held it's handle Within the grasp of his left hand A very impressive likeness Of a gallant warrior. Nothing within the painting Nor the artist comprehension Could have ever captured The brutality Those brave soldiers, those King's men Dispensed upon their over seas campaigns. What slaughter they brought about What hell and brimstone showered Upon the native villagers Along their paths To glory, Gold And fountain of youth Yet all I saw was a portrait Of a gallant Capitan "De Los Conquistadores." I think most who appreciate art look upon a work and wonder about the story behind it. You've captured that feeling perfectly and took it one step farther. Great descriptions lead to the last verse, where the truth unfolds. Well done!

There's a Restaraunt in Ybor City in Tampa, Florida called The Columbian. The tiled walls are spectacular and document the conquistadors quest for The Fountain of Youth. Your Spanish adventurer is there...much the same as you've painted him here. I recall studying his eyes and found them full of living a dream. Your poem is a testimony to this painting.

How true William! We see these paintings as knights in shining armor as the artists paint them. We never see what is behind them. An astute poem that points out how we perceive in error, many times.
