A Year ago I entered a Poetry contest
About the destruction of New Orleans
By "Katrina" I wrote a piece
Titled "A Woman Misplaced"
I won fist price
This is my respond to the Anniversary
Of that disaster.

A Woman Misplaced II
~~~*~~~
Still feeling misplaced
A Year has past
She returned
Not too late to observed
Everything still seems
The same, unoccupied.
~~~*~~~

Water levels subsided
Houses were all in unlivable
Conditions
She recognized
What was left
Of her childhood dwelling
She cried.
~~~*~~~
Couldn't believe
All her belongings, were gone
Destroyed, pilfered, vandalized
Just an empty shell.
~~~*~~~

Were so many memories
Of the wonderful house
She once dwelled
Were lost
Like tear drops, in the rain.
~~~*~~~
She thanked God
She's still alive
Her road to recovery
Has been short of hell
her return to reality
Within her mind
Has not gone too well.
~~~*~~~

William, an intense recount - still easily witnessed, through your follow-up!

God bless you, Sir...you deserved First Prize! Congratulations!

A very powerful piece, William - and a year later, many are very sadly still in that place in their minds.

On todays news it was reported that less than half of those displaced by Katrina have been able to return to date...how fitting you would remember the victims with another tribute....

It is often difficult to start again from nothing, with not one thing from your past to confirm your memories. It can be freeing as well, as some have stated. It is a time to begin again, leaving all of the ghostly shadows of their past behind them and to be granted a fresh start. For many it was a devastating storm that tore their life apart and yet for others, it was a washing away of a past that had held them in a chokehold for too many years. Life moves on, with or without the tangibles, but for many it leaves a bitter emptiness from which they will never be free. Congrats on last year's prize. Very nice contribution to a year of emotional healing.
Take care,
Sherry

Willian congrats on the win last year. This one leaves such a residue of sadness! How can we ever imagine what they went through.I only have a tiny vague idea because I once lost everything in a fire. But nothing like what was lost in Katrina, and the devastation. It bothers me I can only guess what it does to them.
Love,
Eileen

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
