Soft Whispers In The Night

A Gentle Familiar Voice
I heard
Whispering softly my name
In the darkness Of the Night
Awakening me
From a deep relaxing sleep
I looked around, baffled
In response
I called out her's
Yet in the darkness
No one was there.

In the past
Of occurrences like this
I was taught
Never to respond to the calling
Of your name, from the unknown
When in your mind
You thought someone
In the darkness
Softly whispered your name
Knowing you where alone.

I asked myself
Is my sanity playing tricks?
On me
I stayed alert
Staring into the darkness
I drifted
For a second or two
Saw my wife, in the darkness
Walking towards me
How could that ever be?
She is here
Lying nestled next to me
I can hear her soft snoring
Feeling on my back
The warmness, of her soft body
Is my sanity playing tricks
On me
Or was it a visit
From the unknown?

Soft whispers in the night when inside a foxhole in Nam one thought the voices trying to calm dawn the sorrow of brothers gone were a sign of dementia; but they were there, in front of me, saying that they would make a wall with themselves to protect me, their brother.
The barrage went on all night.
When sun up came, there were a few tracks on the mud of people standing in front of the foxhole facing the enemy lines, foot tracks that weren't there when I took the watch.
I was untouched but both sides men bought the farm.
I thanked my brothers.
Even if someone thought I went out of my rocket.
