As I wrote this piece
I found myself whistling
"Lullaby Don't You Cry"
I lay on my bed
To rest my weary bones
Tired, Sleep overtook me
Like A John in a whore house
With a pocket full of money.
At a distance, I thought
I heard
A bugle call
It wasn't reveille
Nor mess call
What the bugler blurred out
Was a soothing and serene melody
Known as taps
It made me snuggle deeper
Into the soft comfort of my bed
Could this be my final call?
I thought without a worry
Is my time here, at the now?
I don't hear
The thunder of any helicopters
That'll carry me away
Into the royal sunset
Of my dreams.
I am an ex Marine
Am I like an old soldier?
That will never die
Or am I like the one,
That will just fade away?
I find myself thinking more
About the other side
I am presently OK
Just that these thoughts
Embrace me at the most
Unexpecting time.
Questions!
Will my love ones remember me?
Will my dear friends miss me?
Will those I haven't seen
For a while, ask about me?
Will they be shock at the news?
Will taps be echoed?
From a nearby wooded area
Of a chosen cemetery
Will a salute of four round volley
Be fired
By an honor guard squad, of riflemen
Awakening the mourners, into reality
Will the lone piper pace
Around the perimeter of my grave?
As he tearfully plays amazing grace
Will my survivor be awarded?
The American Flag, folded in a triangle
Before the green sod
Is laid upon me?
I agree with Carole this one tugs at the heart...makes one stop and think about the reality of what's going on in our world today! You've penned it well...my friend!

Yes, I quite understand I have had those same thoughts.
Probably since there have been so many deaths later, and especially when it is the military and we know the last of the last...the Old Glory presentation. Yes, a Marine can wonder, guess it is a way of pre-prep you know something you know is someday inevitable.
It was ironic that I came here to drop you off a little note about a military posting and found you also have posted a military related poem. Take care William as always~love to you and yes you will never be forgotten, I do not think.
Semper Fi all the way and forever William...

A very sad but outstanding write my friend,Well done,
God Bless,
T.A.P.S. cuts through me everytime I hear it William. There is not one soldier that leaves here that does not go with my undieing admiration and sincere gratitude for the service he/she has selflessly given. I think we all have fleeting thoughts about our death, but the soldier learned long ago that each day he/she would dance the dance with lady death and was grateful for the days that she moved on to another partner. This is a fantastic poem, with a bit of your soul bleeding from your quill and on to the page.
Take care,
Sherry
I would say this is so sad but when we reach certain ages in our life, we begin to wonder when, how, where and will I be missed. You have painted a melancholy picture. Great write.
This seems so real as though someone you know has gone through this and you felt compelled to write for her/him.. Very sad this one but also VERY GOOD!
