Toady is my wedding day
Today I lost my best friend
“Him”
Today I buried my best friend
From childhood
We went back a long way
Together.
We studied in the same school
He was always by my side
He was there in “Nam”
Ran along my side, in the jungles
We shared the same foxhole
Fought the same battles
The same enemy.
After the war
We returned to the same
Shameful treatment
Other soldiers were subject to.
Spat upon in the airports
Called names and killers
By scumbags
That enjoyed such freedoms
While we were there
All these thoughts merged
Upon me
At a moment
As I walked away
From his grave
Down a lonesome trail
The lone piper, faded behind me
Playing amazing grace.
I knew I’ll never see him again
My one and only true
Imaginary friend
“HIM.”

Very touching, excellent writing as always sweet man,Hugssss
a very moving tribute, william... thank you for your military service; sadly many returning vietnam vets were treated shamefully-- most people understand that, NOW. clearly not enough was done for them-- and that pattern continues today...
peace and blessings,
carolyn
He will never be gone. A beautiful poem William. And just a small thing. . The vets from Nam will never be forgotten by me my friend. Never. You guys were and still are the cream of the crop in my eyes.
Imaginary or not, the one standing by us over there in a place with bullets wearing many names,is the one that would die together with us.
We tend, in moments of happines, to forget he was always there.
Excellent tribute.
