The dying needs attention
Soon to be mourned
Time is but a factor.
I walked into her room
When she saw me
The dying ember
In her once upon a time
Beautiful eyes
Rekindled a flame
For a few moments
As she
Reached for my hand.
Death was written on her face
Her skeletal features
Smiled at me
I fought back tears.
Drowning my eyes
As I leaned over
To place a tender kiss
Upon her forehead.
Remembering
How beautiful this woman
Was when we first met
My beautiful
Mother-in-law
She mumbled
Incoherent words
In recognition
Words the dying
Mean to utter
To express themselves.
I felt the mere kiss
On the forehead
Was not
Enough to console her.
With her hand still within
My grasp
I kissed the still softness
Of her aging hand.
Hoping she didn’t see
The first tear fall
As I said to someone
Behind me
Kiss your mother
It’s time to leave
Before the Reaper
Arrives.

I had a similar experience, only it's about my very own mother who passed away 9 months ago. WOW...William, this is touching and heart felt to the hilt. This is a sad situation and it hurts like a hot iron being run through your chest. Touching, sad, and images that are so real as you portray the scene.
Try as we may, it is never possible to say that final goodbye and have it set well with us...it is more for the one departing who wishes to share a final moment with each of us. It leaves a deep hollow ache somewhere inside of us that we now know will
be a part of us forever...and the grieving process begins, even before our loved one takes flight with the angels. A painful and introspective offering, William, that touched me deeply.

This one reminds me of the scenario of how my mother-in-law died. She waited 'til everybody in the room to say goodbye to her and told her it was alright for her to leave before she finally took her last breath. She was a strong woman who held onto her last breath before she left.
A very heartfelt write, it speaks volume to many.

Sad well written tribute for your Mother-in-Law
There is nothing wrong with tears coming from
any man's eyes. What is wrong, is the holding back
of those tears.
