Warned
My wife once whispered
Why I am always hurrying
Back and forth
I’ve no time
For her and my seed
Though they know
I truly love them both
I must share more time
While hurrying here, hurrying there.
Soon will come a time
You’ll catch up with yourself
As I exit somewhere
Along the way.
She said to me, as she turned
Away
When I needed her the most.
I arrived home
Late one evening
Just before the setting sun
The house I found empty
All were gone
My furniture, wife and son
What have I done
I questioned myself
Within my mind
Where has everyone gone?
I was left alone,
Was it because I was never home?
Now I am alone
To face the fears
I never suffered all this years.
I search the house
A feeling of loneliness
Shrouded over me
In the living room
I saw a man
Looking out the window.
I couldn’t see his face
Yet I possessed no fear
I cleared my throat
To attract his attention
There he continued to stand
I tapped him on his shoulder
He turned, startled!
I looked at his face
T’was like looking
Into a mirror, I saw myself
He looked at me, he saw himself
We stood there,
Both looking out the window
Both left alone.

Your poem speaks of such sadness, I remember his tears as he looked at me and said "it's too late Mom". He met himself that day too William. Thank you for sharing.
