Tossed To One Side The Little league game Was over, the home team won The kids Like tiny gladiators Lined up in a single file Facing each other Honoring themselves With high fives For in the little league There are no losers On the diamond field. Than Like children They run off the field Wildly screaming Gathering at a picnic table Where they are treated With icy pops For their great efforts. Fathers Gather To shoot the breeze Talking shop About who did what Or Who was great at bat. My grandson Sits to one side I lean against the fence Staring Into the opposite direction Towards nowhere In particular. I see him sitting alone At a picnic bench So I join him As he eats his other French fry treat Downing it with An ice box Coke. To him I recited A verse or two About us being left Alone You’re a kid resting After a game I’m just getting old And those guys Just tossed us aside Leaving us all alone. Wow, William, this was so intense at the end because of the scene you drew so well of life and happiness and the golden memories of summer as a child, then that ending, really grabs the reader inside, good good work. Happy New Year-Michelle

There is great sadness in this poem but the love of a granfather for his grandson shines through and somehow obliterates the sadness. The random cruelty of childhood is something all children must go through and we hurt right along with them.
