How long Must I endure

~*~

I woke from a restless sleep

Tossing and turning

Wanting

Oh, so much to weep

Your side of the bed

Was cold, empty and un slept

Your silken gown

Laid neatly

Upon your unruffled pillow

I found myself

Reaching for it

So I may inhale the sweetness

Of your heavenly scent.

Your picture adorns

Our every wall

The silent is deafening

I am unable to hear

The happy sounds

Of shy giggles

You once upon a time

Girlishly uttered.

I thought

I had shed the last tear

When the ground you rest

Upon now was blest

And the last rose

I gently placed

On your breast

Your cold soft lips

I kissed

As my last teardrop

Fell.

I will die

A thousand deaths

Before my aching heart

Find final rest

How long must I endure

The pain in my heart

How long

Must I stare at that cold steel

That’s beckoning me

To join you

In the green clover fields

Of Elysium

NO MATTER HOW MANY SEASONS HAVE GONE BY...WHEN THE PAIN OF LOSS REVISITS(AND IT DOES FROM TIME TO TIME) IT IS FRESH AS IF IT HAPPENED YESTERDAY. THE LOVE WHICH YOU TWO SHARED IS THE LOVE THAT KEEPS MEMORIES ALIVE...NOT TO HURT YOU, BUT TO TENDERLY REMIND YOU THAT YOU WERE ONE OF THE TRULY BLESSED...TO HAVE KNOWN SO GREAT A LOVE. STAY STRONG, MY FRIEND...GOD IS WITH YOU. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Sadness in each verse ... so grasshopper, your muse must be suffering from a lost love.

Having not experienced that situation, you've done it very empathetic job in describing it. The sign of a good writer.

This is the key to the door of Immortality... "How Long Must I Endure" is a literary star bigger than Sirius, to glow eternally on constellation Poetry.

I understand this so well, I seen what happened
to my Mother after my Father's death & she too
"died a thousand deaths" over & over again...
your poem is a tearful grip on my heart William

A rip your heart out poem, William. Wish I had the words to make it better, but only time will dull the pain, but never make it go away.
