I exit
The doctor’s office
Into the waiting room
I saw her on my way out
An elderly woman
She I guessed
Was at least
100 years young
We looked into
Each other’s eyes.
She rendered me
The most wonderful
Gentle smile
I have ever seen
In my whole life
Like that of a saint.
I returned the smile
With an acknowledging nod
As I walked out the door
She was wearing
A soft purple dress
Her legs crossed
At the ankles.
She held her purse
Gently on her lap
With her hands
Crossed at the wrist
Like a schooled debutant
Her beautiful eyes
Were hazel to gray
Complimenting
Her lovely tan
Complexion.
I walked outside
To a beautiful
Clear sunny hot day
With a soft breeze
Refreshing my face
From the heat.
At a distance I can hear
The whistle of a passing
Freight train
As I felt
A tear accumulating
At the corning
Of my happiness.
For she reminded me
Of my Mother - in - law
Who loved me
As her own son
What a wonderful day.
