I dreamt
I was a boxer
Found myself in a
modern day arena
Of gladiators
I don my Gloves.
Within my dream
I was aware I've never
Boxed before
Yet I was prepared
For the consequences
Pain will bestow upon
My body and dignity
Within a circle of fighters.
Like on the silver screen
All faded to black
Before the bell rang
Fought I did not
Awakening to wonder
Was I ready to endure
The pain
That accompanies Pride.
Great write. As a teen, I had boxing gloves and a punching bag but I never boxed professionally. Just wanted to learn to defend myself and my family. My father was the boxer. Wow when he gave me a jab in my arm, I could see a few stars. Ha, but I was never stupid enough to hit him back. Respect was paramount in those days. Where did it go? Amen!
A meaningful and thought-provoking write, William. I could never be a boxer as I hate the thought of hitting another person. Thank you for sharing. Love and peace to you,
Your dream reminded me of Paul Simon's, The Boxer. It hurts me just to listen to it. My father was in the Golden Gloves as a teenager and had the cauliflower ears and hearing deficit to prove it. He never talked about it, so I know he wasn't very successful at boxing.
