Who is that shadow
~~~~~*~~~~~
As a child
Shadows stood still
In corners and walls
within my darken room
There to install fear.
from under the covers
I peek
as the clock nearby
Slowly ticks.
Wonder if under my bed
Resides Shadows unknown
My eyes closed tightly
Praying for morning sounds
That come with
The rising sun.
Birds chirpping
Footsteps and voices
alerting without knowing
all is clear
Passing by outside.
Horns blowing
traffic moving
the beginning of a new day
droves My fears away.
Brings back memories to me too of childhood fears at night, I always said the prayer Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray my soul to keep, I always feared I'd not wake up in the morning, I always, slept with my socks on even in my 30's, then I finally took them off for bare feet. I guess I finally outgrew those fears, or some of them.
I remember times that I felt the same way when I was young. The was a radio show called , "Only The Shadow Knows." Lamont Cranston was the Shadow. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.......M
Man! This brought back a memory of my childhood! I remember lying in bed watching the sliver of light peeking through from the upstairs hallway into my bedroom. I really believed that sliver grew wider as if someone were opening the door at times. Oh! How that would keep me frozen under the covers!! Memories!
Love ya!
"Only the Shadow knows…" That sound coming out of the old tube radio was certainly scary enough, but I don't ever remember being scared of shadows in the night… waiting for dawn.
But you seem to have a clear memory through your poem of those scary times. Perhaps you became the Shadow later to fend off your fears as a policeman.
Man, did you ever get in touch with a child's fear of nighttime phantoms which came round. Oh, yes indeed I remember hiding under the cover so many, many times.
WHEN I WAS A CHILD I HAD FEARS OF THE DARK/SHADOWS TOO AND I REMEMBER THE TICK OF THE CLOCK. THEY STAYED WITH ME PAST CHILDHOOD 'TIL ONE DAY I TURNED AND FOUND SOMEONE THERE...'HE' WAS WAITING FOR ME TO TAKE HIS HAND AND SAY 'YES'...AND I DID. THANK GOD WE GROW UP AND ILLOGICAL FEARS GO AWAY REPLACED BY OUR FAITH IN HIM. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
The ominous shadow, everyone's fear; but especially the small child who lends to everyone and everything a reality that may in fact not be real. Still, as you point out, the ticking of the clock is more than real, lending credence to the shadow and its lingering fear. Nice work, William, on a timely subject. John
