The Old Knight

The old knight
Drinks alone as he stares
At the reflection within
From his goblet
Sees not himself
But a young knight
Of days gone by
In shining armor.
Strains his bloodshot eyes
Attempting to focus
Trying to recognize
The young knight.
Unlike Don Quixote
No gauntlet was thrown
No challenge answered
From the windmill
Mistook for another knight.
For the old knight
In his decrepitude vision
He imagined
Was himself once upon a time
From the days
He was then referred to
As “Sir Knight”.
IT'S AMAZING WHERE THE RIGHT SETTING WILL TAKE...AN OLD KNIGHT. SOLITUDE ACCOMPANIED BY THE BEVERAGE OF CHOICE CAN TRANSPORT ONE TO PLACES THAT NEVER EVEN EXISTED FOR THEM AND, AT A SPECIAL MOMENT, WILL ACCOMMODATE. ALLOWING THE OLD KNIGHT TO BECOME 'SIR KNIGHT' IN A 'ONCE UPON A TIME' LAND...FOR A WHILE. BUT THE REALITY IS...ONE ALWAYS HAS TO RETURN TO THE PRESENT AND, HOPEFULLY,'EMBRACE THE BLESSINGS' OF...NOW. THANKS FOR SHARING, WILLIAM. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
A knight or not, there comes a time when we are no longer capable of doing battle. How we handle that is what defines us in the end. This poem reminded me of a song Hank Williams Jr. did titled, Old Nashville Cowboys. If you get a chance, check it out.
an old knight is a true tragedy, as he is supposed to die young; hence the torment over the goblet. The title 'Sir Knight' sounds as a sort of shame to me. Sir Consul sounds better ;)) Cheers, alex
A great poetic vision of the knight that used to be! There is one good thing about the knight marring the princess when he is young. She also strains to see her old knight in some ways how he used to be. That's why folks buy a Jaguar or a Caddy. Who wants an old Kia? But if you were a young class act to start off, you'll turn out to be a classic as you mature vs. an old clunker! LOL
