The Dinner

Returned from a fishing trip
Catch in hand
Visit my father
Rendered him my fishes
For him
To show his gourmet abilty.

I relaxed
As he repared
A superb seafood dinner
A la gourmet, fit for kings
We blest ourselves
Before the prepared table.

We dined in savoring silence
Chased with choiced wine
Retreated to the livingroom
For a brandy and aromatic cigar.

A sip of brabdy, a puff
smoke rings swirl heavens way
Approval
Of A great meal
Culinary complements were in order.

He coughed uncontrolably
I begged him to quit smoking
he promised to do so
just so I won't worry
Already
I was on to his story.

An eerie shadow intruded
Crossing our paths
As I exit the door
The dinner we enjoyed
would be a loving thought
From the past

We worked that night
I returned, after my tour
His, was his last
That day, the reaper
invited himself
Adding my father's name
To a list from the past.

Smoking killed my Tom too and he would not listen to my pleading for him to stop either. Your father did go to his rightful place and heaven and you have the good memories of the fish and the dinners you had with him as I have the same memories of Tom. We were blessed when they were alive and have to feel blessed since they left to go to a better place. It's hard to go on but we do and make it without them, but they will be waiting at that pearly gate to see us enter with them when our time comes too. That makes me feel better just thinking about what a wonderful time that will be.

Poignantly expressed "in the moment" type of write that takes your reader right where you want her/him to be. Thank you for this offering, William. Love and peace. Regis

It's something how things can be somber and sweet at the same time. We need our memories of the happy times, but they are always mixed with the sad ones. Wonderful sensitive write William...
