This is from the days of Viet Nam and first love and a war that broke young hearts and took more than could ever be justified.
We reached this postal discontent
Letters gone of good intent
Mailed through innocence standing by
Grieving words that drip and fly
Hollow hearts of echoed rings
Barely noticed a mailman brings
When dedication writes it's heart
When smiles and pains confuse this part
Then letters heavy with the years
Come back to haunt with dew drop tears
The tons of shadows turning gray
The innocence of bygone days
Never answered crying hearts
Honest Dear Johns come apart
Weeping hopes that soon dry out
When drip-dried years finally shout
When war took hearts and returned blights
When love was tossed out of sight
From youthful loves of two who wrote
The pain of war that took and broke
The glory of the pure of hearts
When innocence and war confront
Bygone days and years on end
When love was king and boys were men.
Susan, beautiful and very sad poem. Times when letters had different meanings to everyone. Some, as the Dear John's, were probably the cause of the ultimate. " Dear Mrs. Jones we regret to inform you that your son Thomas as been mortally wounded in the line of duty." Western Union was never a welcoming form of delivery. Very well written.
As always, a beautiful poem...deep with the emotions of the times. This is an outstanding piece that takes a reflection from the looking glass of time and bears witness for all to see....Bravo
