He would wait,
Lying there on the back of the couch,
Watching out the double windows,
Waiting for me to come home.
I would see him there and he spy me,
And even before the car had completely stopped,
He would be up, tail wagging so hard he shook all over.
Before I was out the car door he was down,
And as I came through my front door he would dance all around.
Oh, sure, there was this thing about food and "out".
But there was more as he put his front paws on my leg,
Stretching his "Hello" up to me.
You cannot buy friends like that (or can you?)
Never find them just quite so true .
And when time and worn heart took him down,
So hard to make the call.
And now he is no longer around,
Been a year this fall.
All those memories, as with all loved ones,
Sometimes bring a smile,
Other times a tear,
And yet I am much convinced,
That part of him's still near.
May he find peaceful places and loving hearts,
May he never be cold or hungry or alone,
May he be there when the veiled mist parts,
And I am coming home.
