If it weren't for Booze

This is a poem written about a friend who has a drinking problem. He has lost his wife, his home, his drivers license and many of his friends as a result of Booze.

IF IT WEREN'T FOR BOOZE
My buddy's best buddy is booze - For my Friend

My buddy and I were talking, during a friendly drink.
Later I wrote down, all the things I think he thinks.
The words won't be exact, cause that was not my purpose.
His words had more meaning, than appeared upon the surface.
Some of the things he said, probably shouldn't be repeated,
but mostly, someone to talk to was all he really needed.

HE SAID,

"If it weren't for booze,
I'd still be spending my life with her
and she'd be dressed to the teeth in diamonds and fur.
I'd still own a car and I'd still have a house
and I wouldn't feel like the worlds biggest louse.
I wouldn't have lost everything I had to lose
and I'd still have her,  .....If it weren't for booze..."

"I wouldn't always have to be walking to work.
I'd have fewer reasons to feel like a jerk.
I wouldn't have to live so close to my job
and she wouldn't think that I'm such a slob.
,,,,, If it weren't for booze."

"There'd have been food in the fridge and money in the bank
and I wouldn't have spent so many nights in the tank.
She wouldn't have had to come up with bail
to get my drunk fanny out of that nasty ol jail.
,,,,, If it weren't for booze."

"Things wouldn't be so cloudy,
my future would be looking bright,
if only I hadn't been out drinking,,,,  nearly every night.
I'd be living wth her, on our own private ranch,
instead of back here begging her for one more chance.
,,,,, If it weren't for booze."

"She'd still be my homecoming queen,
and we'd still be writing the final scene.
We'd have seen most of the sites we were planning to see
and I'd still be her star, like I used to be.
.... The stud in her life,,,,,  would still be me.
,,,,, If it weren't for booze."

WOW!!! A very powerful but true poem. Drink has a lot to answer for, because to me that poem hits way too close to home for comfort. An absolute stunner of a poem, and well thought out.

Well done Richard, Gerry
