THE DAILY GRIND
I roll out of my bed
and onto my feet.
It’s coffee and the sports page,
then rustle up something to eat.
Turn on the stereo
shuffle’s the setting.
Hope you like country music,
mostly that’s what you’ll be getting.
If it’s Sunday
I’ll be mowing the grass.
If it’s any other day,
I’ll probably just sit on my ass.
Sometimes in the evening
I’ll give Mom a call.
If I time it just right
I can also give Karen my all.
When Monday comes around,
the phone starts in about eight.
I always try to answer
I wouldn’t dare hesitate.
It could be a customer
wanting us to enter a quote,
but it’s more likely a telemarketer
or someone asking for my vote.
Usually in mid afternoon,
I’ll simply divorce the phone.
I might slip out for lunch
but, I’ll probably go alone.
Most days I’m on the computer
but, I’ve never done any surfing.
I do proposals for my son,
I like to call it working.
I’ll check out my e-mail
to see what I might find.
If it’s incoming jokes,
I’ll try to respond in kind.
I don’t usually shower,
until I’m going somewhere.
If it’s a really slow day,
maybe a few games of solitaire.
Somewhere around five,
once or twice a week,
I’ll stop for happy hour
with some friends I’ll plan to meet.
Most evenings, I’ll listen to music
or, I might watch some TV.
Maybe have a glass of wine.
Maybe two or three.
I have some favorite shows
that I just never miss.
It’s the wonders of Tivo,
which offer rewards like this.
Monday night is my favorite,
during football season.
It’s a chance to get out of the house,
using football as the reason.
The rest of the year
I don’t favor one night over the other.
But, I’m sure it would be different
if I simply had a lover.
After Monday, the rest of the week
pretty much follows in line.
I’d make plans to do other things,
if, I could only find the time.
Most evenings, if I’m bored,
I might take a little walk.
Friday’s a guy sings at the pub
so, I won’t even have to talk.
When Saturday finally rolls around
my neighbor’s will ask me to golf.
Lately I’ve said yes a lot,
but my game’s been really off.
I used to really enjoy playing.
It was one of my favorite perks.
But, now I’m just so lousy
it seems too much like work.
He generally beats me.
She usually does too.
I don’t like getting beat,
but at least, it’s something to do.
Then comes another Sunday,
and it all starts over again.
I should get out of this rut
but I’m just not sure that I can.
