This is dedicated to one of my favorite aunts who lay for several months in a coma state, they gave her no food or water and practically starved her to death, she was in her eighties. My cousin who had power of attorny signed off on the ok to just let my aunt lay until she finally died. It was her final wish not to be kept on life support, but I'm not sure if that included no food or water.
I'm not judging my cousin for the tough decision that he had to make, I'm just glad I don't have it on my conscious. Most of the family never really understood or appreciated my aunt. She was a tough lady very well accomplished who always taught me to forgive others for their trespasses, especially family. Thelma Waddell Vines, head nurse at North Carolina A&T State University, a strong lady until the end, salute!

Poem Artwork

Now I lay me down to sleep
a final rest that will finally keep
Hopefully I'll be entering
heavens doors
basically finish with all my
earthly chores
I've never really been a hating person
wanting to even any scores
I've always tried to make peace
so as to break from the devil's lease

Some have me misjudged
even on them I've not grudged
I pray for those who this world
has totally smudged
Even though I've found love
for all humanity a cure
It is a hard traveled road that
isn't that pure
Yet this is my final answer
for sure

Now I lay dead in the ground
finally there's some peace I've found
Basically I tried to do my best
but not toward this final rest
I would have preferred more
peace on this earth
A goal I strived for starting from
the first day of my birth
Never hardly found it for
what it's worth

I accidentally found this posting about my late aunt and wanted to counter this fictional version from my Grady. She was well cared for in her last days. Grady lived away and rarely visited. The day to day care was provided by my brother, as was the case with our deceased parents and, today, our last living Uncle. Few, if any relatives visit him at our ancestral farm. Be careful what you read and consider the author.

What wonderful memories you have of your aunt, Grady! Your poem shows the love you have for her.
No, not an easy decision for anyone to make. One of my aunts was in the same condition, and she made her 4 sons and 1 daughter promise to carry out her wishes to have the plug pulled; she did not want to live in a diabetic coma, having one limb after another removed (she'd lost two legs by then). As you say, we can only be thankful the decision-making is not posed to us. Condolences for your loss, my friend.
Blessings and Love - Micke

Such a sad situation, I'm glad she's at peace now.

Good memorial. Aunt Thelma lives on though your words.

My other half, Rene, is taking care of her elderly (90 years old) aunt right now & her family just wants the womans money so they want her designated as unable to live even with Rene...they want her in a nursing home, though they will never get anything from her then, as most nursing homes get rich off of patients like Rene's aunt...ed

'Yet this is my final answer

As sure an epiphany/epitath as many aren't, GEM.
