The first time I met Tony..
was at a mutual friends party..
He was about the same age as my father..
He was talking loud, telling jokes
So I figured this was someone
I could get to know..
I sat beside him..
he and looked over at me..
Introduced himself as the trouble maker..
I replied ..that I see..
He started to make me a plate of food..
Mounting things I knew I wouldn't eat..
H encouraged me to try the salad.
come on take a bite..
So I did this to appease him..
as he watched with delight..
He asked how I liked it..
with a sarcastic little grin..
I told him it tasted like crap..
quick pass the napkin..
Well..that was that..
From that time on we were friends..
He always said the party never started until
Erica came in..
Our family spent many Thanksgivings
with Toni and his wife..
Toni and Sally
were soon like family..
He helped me understand my father..
Giving me advise from his own mistakes..
Helping me understand.
what regrets take..
Toni. everyone knew
was on borrowed time..
He even joked that he
had used up nine lives..
So when I got the call
that he had passed..
About a month after my father
did he last...
I kind of felt it
was meant to be..
Now there are two ornery men
playing poker in heaven..
probably cracking jokes on me..
So to Tony my dear teacher and friend...
Don't stop playing poker..
But take this warning ... to keep..
Watch my father closely...
I know for a fact he cheats..
Enjoy your time above..
don't forget to throw us some luck
once in a while.. with your love
And the next time I play again..
I will think of you both when I win..
And you both know I always win..
Someday I will be in heaven
and you can both deal me in..
I wait to hear you say..
Now that Erica is here
the party can finally begin..
And it will
in time my friend........
ERICA
To Tony.. With all my love.. I miss you .. Sally mises you.. We all love you and wait to meet again...

Very touching!! Knowing Tony for many years, he would have enjoyed this also & would have made a quick joke to relieve the sadness!

That was very touching. Virginia and I can picture Tony sitting in the dining room, laughing and joking. We miss him much and his quick wit. We love you Sally.

well written!
there is a special place i my heart for those who "...learned me the way to behave..." (to quote a.e. houseman) those who learned me the ropes-- sadly, they are mostly dead (at least they are dead in this world).

Erica,
Pain and loss of losing those dear to us is heartbreaking. I love how you put in verse he is in heaven and in good company.
Hugs my friend

Let this coming of age story of a boy named Bean take you back to a simple time. Set in a small southern town in the 1960's, encircled by a river and gleaming white cotton fields.
