From state to state
Town to town..
I pass these crosses on the side of the road..
All young lives ended
with stories untold..
Testament to a life taken to soon..
Sometimes I see a cross
and I have to stop..
to look at the pictures on the cross..
they barely had a start.
I see young smiling faces
looking back at me..
As if to ask why?
We were only having fun.. everyone does..
Why?
Why did we have to die.
I look at the decorations
placed fresh everyday..
from parents and loved one
who can't stay away...
Then the rain comes down.
The pictures appear to cry..
so I sit on the wet grass..
to show them I care..
I know life is hard
I know this was unfair..
I watch a once fluffy pink stuffed toy..
once new and soft..
now the rain has made it dirty..
it is slumped against the cross.
I listen to the rain patter
against helium balloons..
The balloon says
Happy Birthday Jennie..
I hope to see you soon.
So watch for these crosses
as you travel throgh
these high ways and by way..
Remember the message..
And listen to what they say..
We were once young and alive..
Look at where we are today.
Slow down.. look at us.
look at the price we paid.
For a little fun..just a joy ride..on graduation day.
I am so sorry Mommy..
It had to end this way
ERICA
There is a place a fe blocks from me here 4 children died..just out raceing .. that was three years ago.. but there are always new flowers.. christmas trees.. and birthday gifts every year.. I wait for the day when these parents realize that they are not at that spot.. but in their hearts. I also noticed several in Wisconsin and a few other states I traveled throuth.. all mourning.. these children who died in vain.. if noting is learned..
excellent poetic vein... an so very real... let me just add a little haiku...

We all need our crosses, whether they be along side a road or in our hearts and minds. Just to say "I will never forget"...

I live out where we have no big cities but still everytime I have went anywhere I see the crosses too. It is so sad, especially when a lot of them died because someone else wasn`t paying attention or just didn`t care. Great Write. Thelma
I know. I took a nine hour car trip and can't tell you how many crosses I saw from state-to-state. How sad it was, and to capture it like you did and do is was poignant, sad, and very mournful. It was a great way of expression of that subtle, yet deep, sign from God.
so sad. these young innocents died way too soon before their time, and nobody seems to learn a thing. wait until tragedy hits THEM; then they will see that it can happen to anyone! i saw some crosses like that once, but at church; it was for those who had been aborted. it was a real eye-opening experience, and there was much wailing and praying going on. i know i was crying my eyes out and praying that day! :(
