The newly-formed Somali Parliament in Nairobi will soon elect a President. If elections go well, we shall have a government. But if something goes wrong or if a defeated warlord gets angry with the results of the elections, we will be in trouble. What measures do we have to take to survive in this period of political transition in Somalia? Can the patrons stop helping warlords get arms to destroy our country? After all there is a famous patron who supplies warlords with weapons and ammunition to attack their country and people. Anytime these warlords fail to get anything in the peace talks, they revert to conflict and strife. Please stop this dirty and rather wasteful military assistance that so inhumanely destroy our land and people. Our country is in a most crucial moment of passing from a state of disorder to a state of a wishful order.
We want to see the whole world supporting the outcome of the elections with a pledge that no one extends hand to defeated candidates who so long wished to derail the whole process with their greed and hopelessness. We ask the patron of Somali warlords to invest in Somali economy not by giving us money but by stopping to send us bullets and bombs. We need peace to work on our lands. With a stable environment we can grow crops. We can therefore feed our people with food grown by themselves rather than killing them with bullets smuggled from your country.
Let me try to capture a warlord's mind who is making assessment as to what he should do incase he lost elections.
If i lose elections
I prepare a proposal
I pass it to my partner
He funds my war projects
My goal is to grab power
My objective is harness chaos
My strategy is to exploit starvation
My indicators are hunger and disease
My vision is despair and despondency
My mission is to introduce disorder
I need machine-guns to shoot enemy
I need money to bribe my clan elders
I need rockets to destroy buildings
I need explosives to kill and cripple
I need Bombs
I need landmines
Militia? I need them not
Plenty of them I have in stock
My clan has numerical superiority
I never worry about Young fighters
If I lose elections
I walk in the Bush
I burn and pillage
Blow up everything
I please my patron
But in the end
I become a refugee.
Thank you for this well written and informative, eye opener. It is indeed sad that the "needs" of the masses are often sacrificed for the "wants" of a powerful few! It seems that to the power-hungry patrons and warlords, human life has little value. Let us dare hope that these power-brokers that will see a greater value in supporting a humanitarian and economical environment. Wishing you good luck with the elections!

PI novel set in Manhattan during the 1980s when art galleries and model agencies were the two most glamorous businesses in the world. Dangerously well written.
