I am taking part in a campaign against Female Genital Mutilation being carried out in Somalia by civil society organizations. I write this poem to raise my voice against the evils and wide spread atrocities being inflicted upon the lives of our daughters in Africa.
With a knife Amina got circumcised
She was stitched and infibulated
Drugs not administered to kill pain
Hearts had shown her no mercy
Hands were so cruel in their action
They cut more to let her cry more
Unconscious and bleedig Amina died
What a painful exit!
Bells of injustice only make sounds of misery
FGM is a crime. Stop it please. Stop it now
i saw a documentary on this and was terrified, i couldn't believe it and they also did a show on Oprah about this....unbeleieveable

For those not in the know--FGM is Female Genital Mutilation.
95 per cent of the women in Somalia, for example, have had this barbaric procedure done to them. This happens when they are mere babies--children. Parts or all of the external genitalia are cut away with crude instruments, including scissors, wire, razors, or pieces of glass. The child is held in place while this is going on, usually by a family member. No anesthetic is given; imagine if this was your little girl.
Many die after the surgery from hemorrhage, infection and other complications. Lifelong misery is guaranteed for any survivors: prolonged, painful periods, frequent bladder infections, complications during sex and during delivery (the tiny opening left after FGM must be cut open to facillitate intercourse and birth)...would you want this for your little girl?
Why? To continue tradition; it is said that this makes a young girl pure and keeps her from straying sexually.
A shattering write--painful to read, this must be brought to our attention, so it can end. NOW.

Nice work, and thanks for bringing attention to a terrible situation. While I agree wholeheartedly with your position, I use this to remind everyone that "customs" are often not right but are accepted by society because they are customs. Quite often, I hear people in this country try to rationalize wrongs by labeling them 'traditional' or pointing out that 'it has always been done this way'. Your wake-up call may help in more ways than the one you intended.
I do not support FGM. It is cruel. It is barbaric. A campaign is going here against it. It must be stopped. I feel for Amina. Her parents should be brought to justice for murder. Cruel,cruel, cruel!!!
