An immigrant Somali woman is having a debate with her mirror over obesity issues
Back home we have been two good friends
You have been the best companion I ever had
In my purse you were a most cherished item
You were the mirror of eternal passion and love
Reflecting beauty on the parapets of my heart
But in the US you turned out to be a foe of terror
Impinging indelible marks on my self-image
You don’t please me whenever I speak with you.
Inside you I see an oversized image of a young lady
Is that me? That monster?
And the mirror would retort
I am the same mirror as I used to be, dear friend
Never have I changed the fiber of our relationship
But you changed color when we migrated to the US
You are rubbing a cold shoulder upon mine these days
Anytime you get closer you flinch to give me a distance
Back in your home village you ate little and rested little
But here you gobble up and devour like a hungry wolf
You take a ride to the workplace and always use a lift
You grew fat as you had put on unnecessary weight
You are an obese woman. Don’t run away from yourself
What a wise spirit this mirror is, not allowing the blame to be set on him. We all need to be reminded to take an honest look at ourselves from time to time. You did exceptionally well with this one!
