Muki is an indigenous tree widely grown in the riverine areas of South Somalia. Where ever you see it you find hard working people who neither steal nor rob at gunpoint. They just work in their farms. Muki has a great stamina to remain green even in hot and dry seasons when the river is reduced to isolated patches of sand surrounded by fishponds. And it is this unique resilience that the tree stands as a symbol of peace. Through it I see hope when farmers experience the darkest moments of hopelessness. And not only me who admires the Muki tree but even birds do not abandon it when the river level drops considerably low and circumstances develop into a critically damaging condition, close to famine and seasonal failure. you still see their nests hanging down to kiss the river.

Beside the Jowhar river of Shabelle
A mighty Mukay tree stands regally
Gallantly spreading out its branches
To let them caress taciturn waters
And allow the iridescent morning rays
Filter down through its orange leaves
As the Birds mate and chirp gleefully
Inserting peaks into fascinating wings
Preening gaily in the cool misty air
Looking down onto the water below
To enjoy fallen leaves quiescently
Resting upon hushed waters of peace
While pleasantly enjoying the image
Of birds taking time over a Muki tree
