With the sound of new year fireworks
I felt so much terrified and shaken
Thinking that I was in the thick of war
Till I felt the soft touch of a breeze
As peace carassed me with palms of love
Soothing my soul with dreams of hope
Sharing with me a moment of pure joy
As fear faded like the veneer of lust

Don't sweat my friend, you aren't the only one, the first New Year after Nam I wasn't prepared for the firecrackers going near me and I it the deck pronto! (people looked at my like I was from another planet)

Sounds like a bit of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) - those who've lived with the ramifications of war still feel its effects, years later. My Daddy was in the Korean war, he couldn't stand sudden, loud noises. He'd jump a mile! Glad you're safe, hope the rest of your family will be able to join you - then it will be a wonderful 2009. An excellent poem.
