With the curtains drawn
and the doors shut tight
I snuggled under the covers
for another lonely night
I closed my eyes
to think deeply of you
to look back at a time when
we might have been one, not two
I can still see your smile
and the way you moved your lips
I can still hear your voice
as it caressed me in soft, gentle tones
The conversation moved along slowly
thinking we had all the time in the world
to explore living and loving
as if we belonged to each other
We watched and we listened
feeling both anxious and calm
we touched, yet we didn’t
until our commitments were resolved
Looking back once again
dropping tears on my pillow
I pulled the covers up higher
trying to keep the memories inside
when I whispered to my love
I whispered to him a goodnight.
