It feels strange now to think of you.
As if you were never really there.

When I do, I stop myself
almost immediately
...but not too quickly.

At least the tears
and deep sadness
have faded away.

Sometimes I let myself
go back into a memory
of when we loved each other.

Other times my mind will wander
over how I wanted us to be.

We never got there.

I don’t kid myself anymore.
Nor do I work on making it so.

I guess people can only get so far
into their happiness
before realty warps
into another dimension
where there is no sharing
of our love.
