This is a challenging piece and its impact and meaning, I humbly suggest, will vary from reader to reader and that in itself makes it very worthwhile.

I could have changed 'knight' to 'night', but the play on words was already there in 'amour' versus armor, so I didn't want to get too cutesy.
I don't know if any of that would have made it more clear.
