At the bedside of my father, Paul K. Graybill

Tribute to Death and Life Death like a dark shadow lurks Drawing in close from afar Teetering on crumbling life’s edge Blackest of black rose in a jar. With closed eyes and parsed lips Wanting the sweet swell of release Yet grasping for holds to hang on The sound of short breaths and peace. Angels dual for his unspotted soul Fighting and snarling to gain at death Yet, for what, he doesn’t let go? Words stumble and fall in a breath. Death is the hardest of hard He’s lived much more than some He lived a long wonderful life The long sleep just doesn’t come Dayvid Graybill © 2013

My father lingered for four months in the hospital, my mother almost constantly at his side. I was only able to get there once and then I was in a crowd so that we could not communicate one-on-one (breathing tubes did not allow him to speak). Now, my mother fights for every breath and frailties come with every month, yet she smiles and laughs when I call, squeezing every bit of life she can out of life.

I so relate to this... I sat by that bedside too with my morhter, father, and brother. The morning of the day my mother passed away I leaned over to kiss her goodbye as I always did (I stayed at the hopital at night with her) and whispered that if it time to go, the go with wings spread.. we would grieve but know she would be flying free and at peace. She died that afternoon and losing her hard but we knew that she would be whole again... I was touched by your words... and the long sleep will come when it is time.
